Located on Tasmania’s pristine north-east coast, Barnbougle Dunes golf course is a links course of unmatched beauty. Rated by Golf Digest as 16th best golf course in the world, Barnbougle Dunes was designed by Mike Clayton and Tom Doak, who also designed New Zealand’s Cape Kidnappers and Victoria’s St. Andrews Beach golf courses. The links golf course draws direct influence from traditional Scottish and Irish links courses but features a very Australian aesthetic that makes the renowned course its own force in the world of golf. The sublime natural setting, isolated location and championship quality of Barnbougle Resort make for an unforgettable round of golf.
Visiting golfers can stay on-site from a selection of Ocean Villas, Cottages or Bunker Villas. Voyages.golf recommends visiting for a weekend or 3-night stay at Barnbougle Resort and playing both the Dunes Course and Lost Farm, with alternative private accommodations throughout the nearby coastal village of Bridport. If catching the Spirit of Tasmania ferry from Melbourne to Devonport, head east towards Bridport (it is well signed) and a lovely drive through the rural state of Tasmania. Barnbougle is only a 5-minute drive from Bridport town.
As Geoff Ogilvy put it, “I cannot think that this is not only one of Australia’s best, it is one of the best courses in the world, old or new.” The outstanding work of Tom Doak and Michael Clayton in northern Tasmania is easily visualised through the abundant images and reviews of Barnbougle, but to visit and play The Barnbougle Dunes golf course is an experience most golfers cherish for a lifetime. The older of the two courses at the Resort, Barnbougle Dunes lies adjacent to the Bass Strait, the stretch of ocean separating Tasmania from the mainland.
The Dunes golf course bears a striking resemblance to the undulating Irish links courses like Tralee or Ballybunion, with open links land overlooking vast, uncrowded beaches and fierce winds frequently blowing gales. A bump-and-run strategy is essential at The Dunes course, with wide fairways and more undulations than flat surfaces, strategy reigns king. Uniquely Australian features come in the form of native Australian grasses, more sand than green grass, and a golden hue shining for eight months of the year. Barnbougle Dunes is an award-winning golf course with an international cult following; it must be experienced.
Barnbougle’s Dunes course has top-quality golf amenities including a range of putting greens, full-length driving range and a chipping green with bunkers. A small fee is required for range balls. Teaching professionals are available on request and are ideal for learning about how to adapt to links golf if you are visiting for a few days.
The Dunes Clubhouse overlooks the ninth and 18th holes and Barnbougle Beach. The modern building features a fully licensed bar and restaurant that serves contemporary cuisine sourced from local ingredients, open from breakfast to dinner each day. Elsewhere in the clubhouse are female and male changing rooms and the Pro Shop. Inside the Pro Shop, golfers can either stock up on the essentials or browse for Barnbougle memorabilia to take home.
The Dunes at Barnbougle offers three accommodation types including Ocean Villas, Cottages or Bunker Villas. Each type of room is tailored to groups of varying sizes from one-bedrooms to four bedrooms and ranges from 3.5-star to 5-star luxury. The Resort also has another restaurant, sports bar, spa and diverse activities for indulgent stays.
