Homepage / Listings / North America / USA / Hawaii / Waikoloa Beach King’s Course
Home to two championship golf courses, Waikoloa is situated on the southern end of the Kohala Coast, on the Westwern side of the Big Island of Hawaii. The Beach Course as designed by Robert Trent Jones Junior with a par of 70, whilst the Kings’ Course was designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, with a par of 72. Set on ancient lava flows, the lush green golf course contrasts with the unkempt ruggedness of the black-rock coastline and azure waters of the Pacific Ocean. With 36 holes of golf, and a full suite of golf facilities, Waikoloa is Big Islands’ premier golf holiday destinations. It is best to visit the Big Island and play both golf courses at Waikoloa, as well as the nearby Mauna Kea golf course while staying at the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort which has its own 18-hole golf course.
The Kings Course at Waikoloa Beach features a Scottish links-style design with uniquely Hawaiian influences with palm trees and lush foliage coming into play. Multiple tee placements allow for every calibre of golfer to play, whilst numerous lakes, lava outcrops and pot bunkers add a complexity to the Kings Course that sets it apart from other Hawaiian resort courses. It is a longer course than its sister, and set more inland, but it is designed in such a way that lower handicappers can play off the back tees and be challenged, whilst the higher handicappers can have the option of shorter tee placements but still enjoy the strategic hazards that lie on the course.
Thought it plays like a links and the fescue grass lining many greens and fairways is long, the palm trees and numerous lakes, combined with Hawaiian humidity and out-in-out routing will remind you that you are on a tropical island with every shot. The intrigue that lies with the King’s Course links versus resort blend will create long-lasting memories and many conversations at drinks afterwards.
The practice facilities at Waikoloa at extensive. For a small fee you will receive unlimited range balls, complimentary range clubs and access to the 15-care range, surrounded by palm trees. The 400-yard driving range is full range, and manicured Bermuda grass for tees and the separate turf areas allow you to practice every golf shot possible. Other notable facilities include uphill and downhill areas, practice bunkers, a manicured putting green and specialised chipping area.
For those looking to quench their thirst or pallet after your round, Waikoloa various restaurants to choose from and a shuttle going in between each spot because it is a resort after all. Try the Tropics Ale House which is open from 11AM-12AM each day, with draft beers, tropical drinks, pizzas and sliders, it is the perfect way to relax after your round or for dinner.
