Fresh off hosting The Open Championship for the third time, Portrush is buzzing — and not just from the crowds that packed the grandstands at Royal Portrush Golf Club. There’s a new energy in town, thanks to two exciting hotel openings and the growing reputation of this seaside hub as one of the world’s top golf destinations.
1. The Marcus Portrush – Hilton Arrives on the Coast
Opening just in time for The Open in July 2025, The Marcus Portrush is part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection — the brand’s first-ever location in Northern Ireland.
Set inside a restored Victorian building (the former Londonderry Hotel), The Marcus blends quirky storytelling with coastal sophistication. Inspired by a fictional globe-trotter named Marcus, the hotel’s design reflects the spirit of exploration — perfect for golf travellers from around the world without the need to break the bank.
There’s a bold Asian-fusion restaurant (Nemesis), a lively cocktail bar, and 83 boutique-style rooms just steps from the sea and minutes from Royal Portrush Golf Club. It’s boutique meets global brand, and it’s been packed since opening.
2. Adelphi Portrush – Reimagined by Marine & Lawn
Already a favourite among golfers, Adelphi Portrush has been completely revitalised by Marine & Lawn Hotels & Resorts, the same team behind standout golf stays in St Andrews, Troon, and Dornoch.
The updated Adelphi reopened in April 2025 with rich, character-filled interiors, an inviting bar and restaurant, and upgraded rooms — all just a stone’s throw from the harbour and a short walk to the first tee at Royal Portrush. It’s boutique, luxurious, and built with golfers in mind.

3. The Atlantic Portrush – A New Owner
And the big news doesn’t stop there. Marine & Lawn has also acquired The Atlantic Hotel Portrush, another landmark property in the heart of town. While details on its future plans are still under wraps, the acquisition signals a clear intent: Portrush is evolving into a world-class base for luxury golf travel.
Given Marine & Lawn’s track record, expect thoughtful design, plush comfort, and an atmosphere that embraces the spirit of links golf. Aside from a few interior touch-ups to bring the older Hotel up to speed, it is not expected to become a true Marine and Lawn Signature property like the Slieve Donard in Co. Down, Rusacks in St Andrews or Adelphi nearby.
Golf at Its Best
The hotel growth mirrors the region’s rising status in the golf world — led, of course, by Royal Portrush Golf Club, home of The Open in 1951, 2019, and 2025. The Dunluce Links is ranked among the world’s best, and the Valley Links offers a brilliant second course to complete your Portrush experience.
But the golf doesn’t stop at Portrush:
-
Portstewart Golf Club is just up the coast, with two amazing courses and some of Ireland’s most dramatic dunes
-
Castlerock Golf Club delivers rugged links character and a loyal local following
-
Plenty of lesser-known gems along the Causeway Coast make this region perfect for an extended golf holiday
What to See & Do Beyond the Fairways
Portrush is more than just a golf town. When you’re not playing, here are a few top picks to round out your trip:
-
Giant’s Causeway – A UNESCO World Heritage Site just 15 minutes away
-
Dunluce Castle – A dramatic clifftop ruin that looks like it’s been pulled from Game of Thrones (which, in fact, it was)
-
Bushmills Distillery – Ireland’s oldest working distillery, perfect for a post-round whiskey tasting
-
Causeway Coastal Route – One of the most scenic drives in the world, stretching between Portrush and Belfast
-
Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge – A must for thrill-seekers and Instagram fans alike
