The Australian Open Golf is the oldest and most prestigious championship in Australia, first contested in 1904. Over its long history, the event has crowned many of the game’s greatest champions, including Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Greg Norman, Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Peter Thomson, and Cameron Smith. Today, it stands as the pinnacle of golf in the Southern Hemisphere, co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and the PGA Tour of Australasia. The championship is celebrated for its tradition, its global significance, and its unique dual-gender format, showcasing both the Men’s and Women’s Opens together on one stage.
The 2025 ISPS HANDA Australian Open will be played at the world-renowned Royal Melbourne Golf Club from 4–7 December 2025. Founded in 1891, Royal Melbourne is the oldest golf club in Australia and is consistently ranked among the top ten courses worldwide. Its famed West Course, designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie, is revered for its strategic bunkering, fast-running fairways, and lightning-fast greens. The East Course, designed by Alex Russell, is also highly regarded, and together they form the legendary Composite Course used for major international events. Royal Melbourne has previously hosted multiple Australian Opens and three Presidents Cups (1998, 2011, 2019), cementing its reputation as one of the greatest venues in world golf.
The 2025 Australian Open will be a 72-hole stroke play event contested over four rounds from Thursday to Sunday. A cut will be made after 36 holes to determine the final field for the weekend. In recent years, the championship has introduced a dual-gender format, with both the Men’s and Women’s Opens played concurrently and sharing equal billing on the international stage. The men’s champion will receive the historic Stonehaven Cup, while the women’s champion will lift the Patricia Bridges Bowl. This format highlights the inclusivity of the event and sets it apart as a truly unique national open.
