About

The Royal Melbourne Golf West Course is consistently ranked in the Top 10 golf courses in the World by the biggest rating platforms. The Club was founded in 1891 and has since been host to numerous national and international tournaments, including the 2019 President’s Cup. The West Course is rated as the best in Australia and number five in Golf Digest’s 200 Greatest International Courses 2018. Other major tournaments that have been played at Royal Melbourne are the Australian Open, Worl Cup and Bicentennial Classic. The Royal Melbourne Golf Club has been easily accessible from the CBD, and is the crown jewel in Melbourne’s famous Sandbelt region of golf courses. Nearby golf destinations include The Commonwealth Golf Club, Victoria Golf Club and Kingston Heath Golf Club.

Golf Course Information

Alister MacKenzie originally laid out the plans but it was former Australian Open champion Alex Russell and greenskeeper Mick Morcom who built the East course in 1931. The bunkering and green contours are very similar to the West Course, and while the greens are smaller than the West, they are as beautifully constructed and sloped. The East Course starts and finishes on the main site and is highlighted by seven ‘home paddock’ holes.

It incorporates some of  the most dramatic undulation on the course, the short four, long four, and mid four start is brilliant with clear risk and reward options from the tee and birdie to double bogey possibilities. The closing stretch starts with the short par 4 15th and the heavily bunkered 16th, which is the flattest ‘home paddock’ hole of either course but one of the best and most underrated par 3s in Melbourne. The final two holes are famously used on the world-renowned Composite Course. The East Course is out shadowed by the West, but it also features in Golf Digest’s Top 100 Golf Courses at number 55, and that  is no easy feat.

Practice Facilities

The Practice Range is open seven days a week from 7AM to 5PM and is for Members of the club and guest of the club if you have a green fee for that day. Tokens for 40 range balls can be purchased directly from the Pro Shop on the day. The practice short game area consists of a pitching area and putting green, as well as a practice bunker. You will need your own golf balls, however, because range balls are not permitted in the short game practice area.
