About

Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club has a long history dating back to 1892, and is commonly associated with the name ‘Deal,’ which it gets from the nearby town of the same name. Royal Cinque Ports was the third English course after Royal St George’s and Royal Liverpool to host The Open Championship. Henry Hunter, James Braid and Guy Campbell have all contributed to the course design and it remains a testament of fantastic links-golf of early 19th century beginnings. The golf course is adjacent to Princes Golf Club and its onsite accommodation The Lodge. The golf course is at Royal Cinque Ports is best played as a weekend golf break from London as part of a 3-round weekend, including the nearby Princes and Royal St Georges golf courses. Golf Course Information

‘Deal,’ or Royal Cinque Ports, is undoubtedly one of the most challenging links golf courses in England. The back nine is unrelenting when a south-westerly wind is up, so that you must ensure your front nine scores well. Rolling sand-dunes covered with long grass and tight fairways make for continually tricky lies where an even stance is rare. The course has a classic out and back layout, and with fast greens to add to the trickiness of the rolling fairways, players can be sure of a tough challenge at Royal Cinque Ports.

Martin Ebert, who trained under Donald Steel, and has a reputation as a fantastic golf course architect, said ”the back nine has always been one of the most testing stretches of holes in golf, just one par three and a series of tough fours along with the wonderful par five sixteenth add up to a very long inward half. Added to that, play from the twelfth is invariably straight into the teeth of the wind. However, it is not the challenge of length that is the greatest attribute of the course, this emanates from the superb set of greens and surrounds; they are a match for any golfer in the world. Their undulations and to a certain extent, their quirkiness make them a wonderful example of classic seaside links greens. Golfers would be forgiven for wondering if they have just been mown out from existing levels without any reshaping at all, which is just as it should be.”

Venue Information

The original clubhouse was built around 1892 following the birth of the Club. Today they have a building that shares the same atmosphere and has a very friendly and relaxed team of staff.
