About

Situated due east of Tasmania’s capital of Hobart and south of the Tasmania Golf Club is the renowned Royal Hobart Golf Club. The Championship golf course has hosted many Tasmanian Opens, Australian Opens and Australian PGA Championships. The Golf Club can be traced back to Federation in 1901, it formed as a club in 1916, although it was granted ‘Royal’ status in 1925. Royal Hobart is a must-play for any visiting travellers to Hobart, it is located just 20 minutes from the CBD and 5-minutes from the airport. In 1997, Royal Hobart Golf Club adopted a new course master plan to guide long-term improvements to ensure the golf course maintains the challenges required of a modern championship golfing facility. Golf Course Information

Royal Hobart is known for its lethal bunkers which draw parallels to the Sandbelt region of Melbourne such as Kingston Heath, Victoria Golf Club and Royal Melbourne. The parkland layout is situated on a sand-base and features 80 greenside and fairway bunkers. The biggest challenge at Royal Hobart is strategy. Fairways are generally narrow and tree-lined, while large greenside bunkers protect firm greens. Accuracy from the tee is demanded with every shot, and is even more important when navigating the myriad bunkers throughout Royal Hobart’s eighteen holes. Pay attention at on holes that dogleg as it pays to place your golf ball in the right spot from the tees.

For a golf course in the Southern extremity of Australia and the world to have hosted internationally-acclaimed championships, it needs to retain championship quality. Though its subtleties challenge pro golfers, Royal Hobart is a very accessible golf course for amateurs and social golfers. There are various tee-boxes and walking the golf course is very easy to do. Over the years, subtle improvements have enhanced the golf course yet it has always retained its original design concept, which is a testament to architect Vern Morcom’s design capabilities.
