Solheim Cup Venue, 2023: Finca Cortesin Golf Club
The Finca Cortesin Golf Resort is one of Spain’s premier golf destinations. The golf course was designed by Cabell Robinson who is a master of golf course architecture. Relatively new by golf course standards, Finca Cortesin sits on 215 hectares of prime real estate, with some of the most affluent homes in Spain surrounding the golf course. Perched aside a mountain overlooking the Mediterranean, Finca Cortesin resides near two of the most important marinas on the Mediterranean coast: Puerto Banús and Sotogrande. Golf Digest rated Finca Cortesin as one of the best Resorts in Continental Europe, and the course as the fourth-best in Spain. The Golf Course features intriguing elevation changes, cunning yet subtle greens, water hazards and magnificent views. There is no better place to host a marquee event such as the Solheim Cup than Finca Cortesin.
Solheim Cup Format
Play for the Solheim Cup tournament stretches across three days. There are 28 matches (eight foursomes and eight four-balls) played on days one and two. There are 12 singles on the final day. The same format is used in the Ryder Cup. With a total of 28 points, 14.5 points are required to win the cup, and 14 points are required for the defending champion to retain the cup. If the score is even after 18 holes, each team earns one-half point.
Qualification and Selection for the Solheim Cup
Team USA has a selection process by a points-based system, with US players on the LPGA Tour receiving points for each top-twenty finish on tour. Starting in 2015, eligibility for Team USA was expanded to include more categories of female citizens, including those born overseas. Team Europe’s selection process involves the top five players from the Ladies European Tour, with another four selected on the basis of the Women’s World Golf Rankings. Each team has a number of captains picks, which are players chosen at the discretion of the team captains, regardless of their point standings, though often those selections are drawn from the next ranking players.
