About

Situated on the South-East coast of Spain, not far from the Mediterranean Sea, Gibraltar and enjoying 300 sunny days a year is Real Club Valderrama. It was laid out originally by Robert Trent Jones in 1975 when it was known as Los Aves, but in 1985 Jaime Ortiz-Patino developed it into one of the best golf courses in the world, having played host to multiple major tournaments including the 1997 Ryder Cup. Real Club Valderrama has also played host to the Volvo Masters, World Golf Championships, Andalucía Masters and Open de España. There is also a clubhouse with restaurant and bar, club hire with electric trolleys, buggies and manual trolleys also available. Various images supplied by Gary Lisbon.

Visiting south-east Spain for golf is a favourite past-time for many international golfers. We recommend staying at the Finca Cortesin Resort, while playing its championship golf course, as well as Real Club Valderrama, La Reserva Club Sotogrande and Real Club Golf Sotogrande. Each unique golf course features fantastic Mediterranean temperatures and championship golf.

Golf Course Information

One of the most significant challenges in golf can be found at Real Club Valderrama; Robert Trent Jones knew how to make a challenge out of hilly terrain and he used the contours and various elevation changes in Valderrama to the greatest extent. However, the course can still be enjoyed by players of all handicaps despite each hole being of championship quality. The tee-boxes are staggered with various choices to you can adjust your skill to the weather conditions of the day or however you feel as you tee-off. Keep in mind, however, that the maximum handicap for males to play Valderrama is 24 for men and 32 for ladies.

Valderrama is an elite private members’ club but it is not impossible go gain entry. Because of this exclusivity, the course is not over-crowded and it’s always in the best condition. It is one of two European golf clubs to be awarded full Audubon status – a mission to conserve and restore natural ecosystems. In June 2014 for its renown, history of tournaments and general impact on Spain’s sporting sector, King Juan Carlos granted Valderrama a royal status, changing its name from Club de golf Valderrama to Real Club Valderrama. It is a golf course seriously worth your time and effort to play when visiting Southern Spain.

Venue Information

The Golf Club has all the usual amenities including Callaway rental clubs, a Pro Shop, a locker room, golf lessons with Pro residents. It also has a driving range and putting green to warm up at. The service at Real Club Valderrama is the stand-out point: from where you enter a staff member will port your bags and you’ll be brought to the caddy master and enjoy a friendly welcome reception from the staff. Everything from the moment you enter to the moment you leave is choreographed to an expert level and that comes down to the expertise of the staff and exclusivity of the golf club.
