About

The host of the 2007 New Zealand Open, The Hills Golf Club resides just 20-minutes from Queenstown, near Arrowtown. The Hills is a private club with some difficulty getting a green fee, although it is not impossible. A shared golf cart is included with every green fee. The Hills has an immaculate design; it is a club of high integrity, and an experience to remember. The golf facility lies at the foothills of Coronet Peak, a popular skiing destination in winter. Golf blends exquisitely with art at The Hills with sculptures complementing the course. Incredible valley panoramas surround everything. The Hills Golf Club features in our Queenstown sample travel package, along with nearby golf destinations including Jack’s Point, Arrowtown and Millbrook Resort.

If you can get a round at The Hills, ensure you have a drink at the art-house style clubhouse that reflects the level of design found on the golf course. The Hills is a must-play destination in any Queenstown golf package. We recommend including The Hills in any Queenstown golf package that includes Jack’s Point, Arrowtown, Cromwell and Millbrook.

Golf Course Information

Designed by John Darby, a renowned Kiwi golf course architect, The Hills is owned and operated by Michael Hill, a jeweller. The course resides next to his family home in Arrowtown, and what was once a single hole request of Darby, transformed into an 18-hole golf course capable of holding The New Zealand Open, which it did in 2007. The course is modern in design but plays like a links golf course with undulating fairways and greens. The 18-hole route is pockmarked with bunkers situated in natural depressions, and the notorious Dragonfly lake that frames the fifth and sixth holes.

The Hills golf course features breathtaking scenery of the southern alps all around, with valley views over Wakatipu Basin. Snow-capped backdrops frame every hole on the golf course most of the year, while an abundance of native grasses and flora breathe life into the masterpiece. Wind can occasionally be a challenge at The Hills, although its inland setting sets it apart from traditional links courses. Its wider fairways and greens make it contemporary by design. Overall, the natural topography, combined with architecturally brilliant design, comprise The Hills golf course and certifies its place in high amongst New Zealand’s elite.
