About

Golf has been played over the links at Gullane for more than 350 years. Today, Gullane Golf Club is one of Scotland’s most prestigious member clubs, mixing the finest tradition with some of the most admired natural links land in the world. The land for the three courses has superb turf and a climate that allows all year-round golf with dramatic coastal views and a golfing challenge to savour. The three courses are known by numbers which reflect their age: Gullane No. 1 (1884) has a long history of hosting national and international championship golf events. Nearby golf courses consist of Dunbar, Muirfield and North Berwick.

Gullane No. 2 (2898) was laid out by the legendary Willie Park Jnr and has also been used for Open Championship qualifying as well as the Seniors Open Amateur. Gullane No. 3 (1910) was also laid out by Willie Park Jnr and is the shortest of the three courses, but it provides a wonderful test based on shot-making skills rather than power. Overall, Gullane offers a unique range of golfing experiences for members and visitors alike, combining a major role in the history of golf in Scotland, great golfing conditions, and a truly spectacular environment.

Golf Course Information

The Course No. 1 is carved into the ancient links turf, pot bunkers, wispy grasses and smooth-running greens is a unique challenge for the serious golfer. The PGA website voted the course one of the most picturesque golf spots in 5th place in the World in a list that includes Augusta and Pebble Beach.

Not surprisingly, the course has been the setting for a host of highly acclaimed tournaments including the 2018 ASI Scottish Open and Ladies Scottish Open, the 2015 AAM Scottish Open and Final Qualifying for the Open Championship on five occasions. The Scottish Amateur Championship and the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship have both been hosted over No. 1 on four occasions.  In 2018, Gullane hosted the European Tour: the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open, won by Brandon Stone,  was played over a Championship composite course featuring 16 holes from Gullane No. 1 and two holes from Gullane No. 2.

In 2019, National Club Golfer Magazine rated Gullane No. 1 as the 18th best course in the Top 100 Courses in Scotland.  Golf Magazine (USA) recognised Gullane No. 1 as having one of the best holes in the world in the form of the spectacular par-five 3rd. It was also ranked Scotland’s 20th Best Course in Scotland by Golf Digest in January 2016.  With every hole having its own distinct character, Gullane No. 1 is both memorable and enjoyable, and undoubtedly one of Scotland’s finest and most scenic links courses.

The architect of Course No. 1 is unknown: golf has been played over the links since the 1600s.  The type of grass is predominantly Bent on the fairways and Fescue on the greens. There are 124 bunkers scattered across the course and the average green size is 550m Sq.  There are distance markers on the sprinkler heads on Gullane No. 1 to the front, middle and back of each green. A golf course of the highest class, Gullane fascinates players with its unique uphill and downhill shot-making that is unusual for a links course, but one thing always remains: the turf at Gullane is superior links-turf and makes every round one to remember.

Venue Information

Members’ Clubhouse

The Members’ Clubhouse opened its doors again in early June 2015 after an 18-month restoration. “The Members’ Clubhouse has been a landmark on Gullane’s skyline for nearly 100 years, so it was imperative that any changes would not affect the look of the town,” said David Morgan, the Club’s Secretary. “Instead we wanted to retain the exterior of the clubhouse while revitalizing the interior to accommodate a busy, modern club with all of its demands. I am pleased to say this was achieved.” The 18-month project saw Gullane’s iconic clubhouse close to both members and the public while the extensive restoration work took place. The clubhouse now incorporates flexible, interlinked social spaces while retaining the character of the original layout.

Visitors’ Clubhouse

Opened in 1993 by Ryder Cup Captain Bernard Gallacher, the Visitors’ Clubhouse is situated next to the practice ground and the first tees of No. 2 and No. 3 courses. For visitors and members alike, this is an ideal meeting place where the buzz around the tees is palpable and banter in the bar is always good-natured. With comfortable dining facilities and well-appointed locker rooms, the Visitors’ Clubhouse provides convenient access to all three courses as well as all the facilities you would expect at a major golf complex. For many, the Visitors’ Clubhouse is the ideal starting point for a great golfing experience. After your game, you can relax in the lounge bar overlooking the courses and discuss the challenges of the links. Soft spikes are allowed. You can also order from a wide variety of foods ranging from snacks, daily specials and a la carte meals. There is a battery charging area in the bag drop area as you enter the Clubhouse.

Practice Facilities

Members and visitors playing the course that day are welcome to use the club’s practice facilities during their visit. A full-length range is located next to the Visitors’ Clubhouse with practice putting greens conveniently positioned next to the 1st tees of all three courses. The short-game area, practice putting green and training bunker are situated at the far end of the range. There will be occasions when the practice range is not available and notice of this will be displayed at the No. 2/3 Starter’s Box adjacent to the range. – Range balls are included in the green fee rates.
