Big Meadow Golf Course
The stunning Big Meadow is a favourite among Oregon’s golfers, garnering numerous awards over its 30-plus years. In 2013 it was honoured by GolfWeek Magazine as one of the “Best Courses You Can Play” in Oregon. This straightforward Robert Muir Graves design takes golfers through a grand journey of the Oregon Cascades. Big Meadow’s straightforward design provides classic challenges from tee to green. Expansive fairways appeal to golfers of all skill levels, and elevated greens complexes are punctuated by strategically placed cape and bay bunkers, which feature a dramatic, high-faced flair. Updated in 2007, the course stretches over 6,400-metres / 7,000-yards from the championship tees and features expansive fairways, sweeping cape-and-bay bunkers and elevated green complexes to challenge golfers of all skill levels.
Every component of the course is integrated into the spectacular mountain setting of Black Butte Ranch with towering Ponderosa pines and shimmering stands of Aspen trees. With 16 holes reaching into the forest and only two fairways aligned parallel, the isolation of the great outdoors is as present as the abundant wildlife that inhabits The Bit Meadow. The rolling terrain nonetheless is accommodating to golfers who want to walk the golf course, although they will discover that the elevation changes on the back nine are more evident than on the front. The fourteenth hole presents one of the Northwest’s finest golf course photography opportunities, providing golfers with a dramatic view of Three Fingered Jack, a jagged volcanic peak rising above the Central Oregon landscape. The tenacity of the design has not gone unnoticed either, as it has been selected to host numerous Pacific Northwest professional and amateur championships.
Glaze Meadow Golf Course
For years, thousands of golfers have considered Glaze Meadow Golf Course at Black Butte Ranch to be the most iconic in Central Oregon. When the course reopened in 2012 after an extensive $3.75 million renovation by architect John Fought, golfers were treated to an experience unlike anything else in Central Oregon. Glaze Meadow was originally designed by Pacific Northwest legend Gune ‘Bunny’ Mason, debuting in 1978. While the basic routing of the holes remains intact, the corridors throughout the golf course have been expanded, to both enhance playability and create a variety of new challenges. Featuring slightly elevated greens, square tee boxes and deep grass-faced bunkers, the new Glaze Meadow reflects the spirit of classic golf course design in a true mountain setting. Glaze Meadow plays 6,407-metres / 7,007-yards from the back tees. The modernisation of the design includes five sets of tees on every hole, allowing golfers of all skill levels to enjoy the game.
The course features meticulously groomed bluegrass-rye fairways, with gentle hills and hollows surrounding the bent grass greens. The greens at Glaze Meadow vary in sizes, dictated by the distance and approach to each. Longer holes offer slightly larger greens than shorter holes, but most greens offer openings in the fronts to allow for run-up shots. The rolling landscape, accented by quaking Aspens, Ponderosa pines and spectacular views of the Cascade peaks, including North Sister and Mt. Washington, provides a sophisticated journey that is engaging and memorable. Implementing the terrain’s natural elevation changes, Fought presents a golf course that is interesting, provoking and just fun to play, again and again, making Glaze Meadow a ‘must-play golf course in central Oregon.
Practice Facilities
The driving range at the Black Butte Ranch is spectacular, with many open bays and views of Mount Jefferson, you will not want to stop sending golf balls into oblivion. The practice putting area is also extensive. In fact, there are two practice putting areas, one at each course.
Golf Lessons
The Black Butte Ranch has many varieties of golf lessons available privately or for groups. Lessons can be arranged for 1 whole day, with a combination of indoor and outdoor instruction with lunch breaks and workbook & video time. Other lessons can be arranged for ladies only, or a set amount of scheduled lessons of varying lengths. The PGA professionals are very professional and there are options for golfers of every ability, whether attempting to stop a slice or decrease a high handicap, the Black Butte Ranch PGA professionals are always on hand.
Accommodation
In true ranch fashion, the Black Butte Ranch accommodation ranges far and wide & incorporates a mix of holiday homes and individual cabins, lodge rooms & condos. It has both a permanent population and wide range of holiday homes up for short-term & long-term stays. Abundant year-round recreation is what makes Black Butte such a special place, and 120 Ranch holiday homes located throughout the resorts 1800 acres offer the perfect place to settle in and relax. Small lodge rooms, to cabins and condos, to full-sized 6-bedroom houses are available and will suit groups either for a romantic weekend or week-long stays for large groups, or many months if you like.

Resort Dining
Lodge Restaurant
This iconic restaurant is a focal point of the Ranch, providing a relaxed, upscale dining experience with spectacular views of the Cascade Mountains. The finest ingredients and unbounded creativity converge to produce culinary delights with regional Northwest flare. Chef James Healy’s cuisine is destined to be a highlight of your stay at Black Butte Ranch. To-go orders are available but are dependent on the season and how busy the Lodge Restaurant is at the time. Wait times for to-go orders vary. Allow at least 45 minutes from call-in to pick up on takeout orders from the Lodge Restaurant or the Aspen Lounge.
The Aspen Lounge
The Aspen Lounge, perched atop the third floor of the Lodge, presents a scenic vista and special retreat with its own atmosphere. Sip a regionally inspired house-made cocktail, wine or draft beer and savour casual meals while absorbing the stunning 270-degree view of the Central Oregon Cascades from the outside deck. The Aspen Lounge features a fabulous small plates menu and daily specials. Food ranges from gourmet salads, burgers, fish and signature steaks.
Robert’s Pub
The casual, family-friendly Robert’s Pub, located inside Big Meadow Clubhouse, is a superb gathering place for families and golfers. Named after Big Meadow Golf Course designer Robert Muir Graves, Robert’s Pub is an excellent summer choice for a casual appetite. The Northwest-style pub menu includes burgers, fresh salads, fish ‘n’ chips and classic sandwiches. The Pub features a wide selection of Oregon microbrews and Northwest wines and boasts an outdoor patio with striking Cascade mountain views.
Lakeside Bistro
Delight in delectable food, craft beers, dazzling views and more at Lakeside Bistro. Lakeside Bistro is the ideal spot to take in the morning majesty of the mountains and lake while sipping coffee or espresso and nibbling a fresh house-made pastry. Stop by for lunch or dinner to grab a pizza, fresh salad or savoury sandwich. Dine poolside and order a local brew from the outdoor bar. The Lakeside Bistro is the Ranch’s favourite casual dining option with unrivalled views of the magnificent Cascades. The Lakeside project recently won three awards for the Sustainable Forestry Initiative.

Thoughtfully prepared appetizers, desserts and complete & fully-cooked meal options allow you to spend less time in the kitchen and more time with family and friends. Home dining options include:

Spa
After an active and adventure-filled day, the Spa at Black Butte Ranch is just what you need to unwind, relax, rejuvenate and reward yourself. Choose from an extensive menu of therapeutic and beauty services that provide head to toe care. The spa treatments and spa packages are designed to help reduce stress and provide a relaxing experience. Luxuriate in massages, body treatments, relaxing to results-oriented facials, couples’ spa treatments focused on relaxation and rejuvenation and a variety of pampering for the hands and feet. Group spa experience packages are also available to complement any outing or event, and their Spa gift sets make an exquisite present. Spa guests gain full access to the indoor pool, fitness centre, steam room and hot tub.
Sports & Pro Shops
The Ranch has a sports shop that stocks all the essentials during your stay, from sportswear, footwear, accessories, towels, sunscreen & sunglasses, pool toys and bags. They also have hiking/fishing/biking accessories for those looking to do all the activities during their satay. The Golf Pro Shops located at both golf courses stock all the major golf sports brands including Nike, Adidas, Greg Norman, Antiqua, Level, Puma & Footjoy.
Horseback Riding
Grab your boots and saddle up for a horseback ride at the Black Butte Stables! Professional wranglers from Black Butte Stables have been leading trail rides at the Ranch for over 18 years. Join the guides and their gentle, trail-wise horses for a classic trail ride and explore the forested trails of Central Oregon. Guided rides are available for guests 7 years of age and older, year-round. All experience levels are welcome. The Stables also offers a customized, full day adventure ride—ideal for a family or group team building activity. Black Butte Stables is located just inside the entrance to the Ranch, behind the General Store.
Outdoor Activities
Year-round outdoor expeditions are a hallmark of Black Butte Ranch. From biking, hiking, kayaking and canoeing to fly-fishing, snowshoeing, white-water rafting and mountain biking, the Ranch is your adventure headquarters. The Ranch also provides convenient access to some of the best fishing, skiing and rock climbing you’ll find anywhere. Whatever season you arrive, you’ll be making memories to share for a lifetime.
Tennis
Black Butte Ranch will inspire you to take your tennis game to new heights. Tennis enthusiasts may utilise 17 outdoor tennis courts throughout the Ranch, including three lighted courts. Black Butte Ranch On-site Director of Tennis Evan Simms offers private and group lessons beginning mid-June. A set or two of tennis in the stunning natural environment is an experience not to be missed.
Swimming
Each of the five swimming pools at Black Butte Ranch was designed for more than just taking a swim. They are sanctuaries where you can relax in the sun and read a good book, create exciting activities with your family and take in the natural splendour and spectacular mountain views. When not in the water, guests can lounge on comfortable chairs under shady umbrellas while savouring food and refreshments from the Bistro and Snack Shops. Glaze Meadow Recreation Center features an indoor lap pool, outdoor pool, wading pool and children’s “spray” ground. There are year-round opportunities for relaxation in the steam room and outdoor hot tub. The indoor pool is also open year-round.
Fitness
Glaze Meadow Recreation Center (GMRC) affords year-round recreational opportunities at Black Butte Ranch and healthy lifestyle options for the entire family. The outdoor pool, hot tub, children’s wading pool and “spray” ground is a popular gathering place to take in the sunshine and inhale the fresh mountain air. The Glaze Meadow Snack Shop operates seasonally, and hours vary Memorial Day through Labour Day. Inside the Recreation Center, there’s something for everyone. For keeping fit, the indoor pool is open year-round and offers leisure swimming, hydro-fit classes and lap swimming. The fitness centre features cardiovascular and strength-training exercise equipment with treadmills, ellipticals and exercise bikes, as well as weight machines.
There’s also a private fitness room where yoga and other classes are offered, along with free weights, exercise balls and stretching mats. The steam room and outdoor hot tub, also open year-round, are wonderful places to relax and unwind after your workout. The Spa at Black Butte Ranch is located inside GMRC, delivering an array of relaxing and rejuvenating treatments. GMRC includes day-use locker rooms with shower amenities, lockers and swimsuit spinners.
Bike & Water Sports
They have bikes for the entire family and child trailers – the most diverse bike selection the Ranch has ever had. New this year – 29-inch wheels, Women’s specific mountain bikes, full suspension mountain bikes and so much more. Glaze Meadow Rental Shop also rents fat bikes, a type of bicycle that uses an extra-large tire to provide flotation, traction and stability on loose and inconsistent terrain. Their new fleet has even fatter tires than before, almost three times as large as your standard mountain bike tire, and they are incredibly fun to ride! The lifeguards at the Lakeside Pool can provide you with canoes, kayaks and stand up paddle boards to enjoy on Phalarope Lake during the summer season. Paddles and life jackets are included.
Fishing Rentals
Meet all your needs for an enjoyable day of fly-fishing on Phalarope Lake through Lakeside Activity Center, including flies and fly rods. (Must be 12 years or older to use the fly rods.) There are free fly casting clinics Tuesday evenings during the summer. A license is not needed for the clinic.
How to Get There
The Black Butte Ranch lies less than 15-minutes’ drive from the little town of Sisters. From the larger town of Bend, the ranch lies 40-minutes’ drive. The closest airport is in Redmond, which lies 40-minutes’ away and does have rental car capacity. For those coming from Portland, Black Butte Ranch lies 2.5 hours’ drive away.
