Valhalla Golf Club is a veteran in hosting world-class tournaments, having hosted the 1996, 2000, 2014 PGA Championship, 2008 Ryder Cup, and soon to be the 2024 PGA Championship. The Golf Club opened in 1986 and has been a bastion of American golf tournaments ever since. Each PGA Championship held at Valhalla has caused dramatic scenes including the three previous winner being Mark Brooks (1996), Tiger Woods (2000), and Rory McIlroy (2014). PGA Championship Format
Play for the PGA Championship was originally match play, however, it has been stroke play since 1958. The PGA Championship tournament features a 72-hole format of 18 holes per day for four days, occurring from Thursday to Sunday. The lowest aggregate score after 72 holes is crowned the PGA Champion. If scores are tied, the lead players enter into a play-off of a two-hole aggregate, with the leader crowned champion, followed by sudden death if players are still tied. The field begins with 156 players. The first cut happens after 36 holes so that Saturday begins with the top 60 players from the original 156.
