About

Just 30-minutes from Dublin’s city centre lies The Island Golf Club, enjoying a tranquil setting on a narrow peninsula that borders the Irish Sea on three sides. Over 100 years old, the Island Golf Club was founded in 1890 and has consistently been ranked as one of Ireland’s top links golf courses. Until 1973 it was reached by boat across an estuary from Malahide, just north of Dublin. Its proximity to Ireland’s capital, combined with its solitude on a narrow peninsula, makes The Island Golf Club a tranquil reserve where golf is the prized pastime. Though you may not have heard of it, you will not want to leave The Island Golf Club off your Ireland golf vacation. We recommend visiting The Island Golf Club as part of our Best of Dublin golf travel package, which features Portmarnock Links, The K Club, Carton House Resort and Howth Golf Club. If travelling from Northern Ireland and Belfast, ensure you stop off at Royal County Down, Ardlgass Golf Club and County Louth Golf Club to experience some of the best links golf in Ireland.

Golf Course Information

Situated amongst rolling sand dunes on what used to be an island and what is now a narrow peninsula, The Island Golf Club is one of Ireland’s oldest golf courses and was ranked 13th in Golf Digest’s Ireland’s Top 100 Courses in 2015. This rating befits select criteria, but it does not account for the beauty of the golf course surrounds, which often makes or breaks a golfer’s experience of the day. The Island Golf course enjoys relative anonymity amongst Ireland’s top golf courses, so do not be surprised if you haven’t heard of it.

The course was established by a syndicate of 10 men in the 19th century, who used a ferryman to take them across to play golf; it was only in 1950 when the club opened its membership and the quality of course represents the harmonious nature by which it was built. Rugged sand dunes lined with long reeds lead to valleys, dips and ridges between that provide a classic seaside links layout. The flora surrounding the course is sensational; we would recommend you take a camera when you play there.
