The Masters is an invitational event & the third oldest major after The Open Championship in the United Kingdom and U.S. Open. It is the first major of the year & held at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, USA. The tournament is held over the weekend ending on the second Sunday in April annually. the prize purse consists of around 15 million but the Green Jacket carries the fame for winning. Previous winners include Dustin Johnson, Tiger Woods, Adam Scott, Jack Nicklaus, Scottie Scheffler, Hideki Matsuyama, and Sir Nick Faldo.
The Masters is the only invitational Major on the calendar and interestingly the only major played at the same course every year. The Masters invites the smallest field of the majors (generally under 100 players) which adds to its revere.
Format
Each round comprises 18 holes. Play is held from Thursday to Sunday with a “cut” after 36 holes or two rounds. After 36 holes, a cut-off score is calculated to reduce the size of the field for the weekend rounds. In 2020, to ‘make the cut,’ players must be in the top 50 places including tied scores. Should the fourth round fail to produce a winner, all players tied for the lead enter a sudden-death playoff. Play begins on the 18th hole, followed by the adjacent 10th, repeating until one player remains. The sudden-death playoff was introduced in 1976 but not utilised until 1979 when Fuxxy Zoeller won on the 11th green (different holes utilised). The current holes were announced in 2004 and are used to this day. Each hole on the course was named after a tree or shrub relating to the plant nursery which occupied the site prior to the golf course. The Azalea is the plant most often associated with The Masters.
