The Masters Golf Tournament is one of the PGA Tour's four majors of the year. The event is usually held annually on the second Sunday of April, but the 2020 event was delayed until November due to Covid-19. The event was founded in 1934 by Amateur Champion Bobby Jones and investment banker Clifford Roberts. The tournament is officially sponsored by the PGA Tour, European Tour, and the Japan Golf Tour.
Qualification
The US Masters field is smaller than the other majors because it is an invitational event whereby the Augusta National Golf Club must invite a golfer. Winning any of the other majors guarantees an invite to the US Masters (U.S. Open, The Open or PGA Championship. The event has an old tradition of honouring amateur golf; it invites winners of the most prestigious amateur tournaments in the world. The current U.S. Amateur champion always plays in the same group as the defending Masters champion for the first two days of the tournament. There are almost twenty different ways to qualify for an invitation, but the historic golf major is renowned for its prestige and large winners' purse.
Format
The US Masters is the first golf major of the year. The tournament consists of four rounds of 18 holes each, from Thursday to Sunday, while the start of the week allows for the players to practice. Wednesdays are reserved for a practice round and the famous par-three round where fans are allowed to purchase tickets to watch. After two rounds (36 holes and two days), a cut-off score is calculated going into the weekend, and the field is reduced to 50 (ties counting). The weekend (Saturday and Sunday) has 36 holes of golf among the remaining competitors where the winner is determined by the final score to par, with the lowest after four rounds being the winner. There is a sudden-death format if there is a tie after 72 holes. The winner of the US Masters is crowned champion and received the famed Green Jacket, where tradition warrants the defending champion place the jacket on the current winner.
