Walton Heath is one of England’s highest rates golf clubs. Offering a challenging heathland layout, Walton Heath’s Old Course features in the UK and Ireland’s Top 50 rankings and in the World Top 100 every year since the inception of the rankings in 1938. Just 30-minutes from Sunningdale, Walton Heath offers a delightful mix of inland links with heathland attributes. Designed by Herbert Fowler, the course dates back to 1902 and a notable character was its club professional James Braid who heralded its opening until 1950. The duke of Windsor was club captain in 1935 and various royals have played it although the course was surprisingly never given a royal charter. A challenging golf course, players must carry the heath from tee to fairway and if your ball strays left or right, it should be pronounced lost.
AIG Women’s Open Format
The AIG Women’s Open has two days of practice rounds, followed by four days of tournament rounds. The tournament is stroke play, meaning golfers count their shots over the four tournament days and whoever has the fewest consecutive shots over the tournament wins the trophy. The field starts with 144 golfers comprised of the top professional and amateur golfers from around the world, representing more than 20 different nationalities. It is one of the most diverse sporting competitions in female sport.
