Offering three championship golf courses, Capitol Hill extends to over 1500-acres and opened in 1999. The first two courses, the Senator and Legislator opened at the same time, but the latest course opened a year after, named the Judge, and is widely considered one of the best public courses in America. The Senator course was named among the Top 10 New Courses in America by Golf Magazine, and for a relatively new golf complex, that means a lot. The complex is just 13-miles north of Alabama’s state capital in Montgomery. The Capitol Hill golf course sits among a string of courses designed by Robert Trent Jones, and what is known as the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail. Set on the banks of the Alabama River, the Judge Course at Capitol Hill has fourteen of its eighteen holes adjoining the water. The first hole is amazing in that it has 200 feet drop from the tee to the fairway that is followed by a green protected by a bunker on the front, cart path on the left, and lake on the right and back sides. A true parkland course, the bunkers are not too big, there are enough trees to cause a problem if your accuracy is not up to scratch, but the water poses the largest challenge. A truly scenic course, Capitol Hill’s Judge course is an all-round masterpiece to say the least.
Opening in 2000, the course is ranked consistently as one of the best in America and certainly one of the top public golf courses in the state. The sixth hole is over a lake to an island green that is in contention with the first hole to be the Judge Course’s signature. The layout features characteristic Jones bunkers that are large and oddly shaped whilst being relatively flat. A vibrant mix of lush fairways, bunkers and waterways come alive on the Capitol Hill Judge Golf Course.
As a 54-hole golf complex, the Capitol Hill facilities are world-class. Practice facilities include a full-length driving range and putting green as well as chipping and short-game area. Carts, caddies and all rental equipment is also available from the Pro Shop where there is a resident pro full-time.
The clubhouse features a large restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon snacks and serves drinks of all kinds. The Pro Shop comes fully stocked with the latest golf equipment and attire from big brands and Capitol Hill’s own branded golf attire. Enjoy a pre-game snack or post-game meal but don’t forget to purchase some accessories from your visit before you leave!
